Auto Insurance Information
Auto insurance provides essential coverage if your vehicle is stolen, damaged or involved in an accident. Beyond the benefits it offers, Michigan drivers are required to have minimum levels of auto insurance.
Eaton Insurance Services is here to help you choose the right auto policy for you and your needs while abiding by the state’s insurance requirements. Contact us today at 810-686-1470 to learn more.
What Auto Insurance Do I Need?
Michigan drivers must carry minimum no-fault auto insurance, including residual liability, property damage and personal injury protection policies. Minimum required bodily injury/property coverage limits are:
-
Up to $20,000 for a person who is hurt or killed in an accident
-
Up to $40,000 for each accident if several people are injured or killed
-
Up to $10,000 for property damage in another state
If you’re ineligible for obtaining standard auto insurance in Michigan and you drive regularly, you can get personal protection insurance. Referred to as personal injury protection (PIP), this coverage pays for your medical care and lost wages if you are injured in a car accident—even if you’re at fault.
Other coverages can be added to your auto insurance policy, but Michigan does not require it.
How Does Auto Insurance Work?
Auto insurance is a contract between you and your insurance company. In exchange for paying a premium, your insurer pays for the agreed-on losses outlined in your auto policy. If you’re financing a vehicle, your lender may also have insurance requirements, which may affect your auto insurance premium.
Numerous types of coverage are available, and Eaton Insurance Services can help you determine the best policy for your particular needs.
Is Additional Auto Insurance Available?
You can further customize your auto insurance coverage in Michigan by including other optional insurance such as:
-
Collision coverage pays your vehicle repair costs after an accident.
-
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage and loss to your vehicle caused by a collision with an animal, theft, vandalism, falling objects, flood or fire.
-
Limited property damages insurance pays the other driver’s deductible if you cause an accident. Otherwise, you may have to pay out-of-pocket.
-
Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage pays the costs if you have an accident with a driver who doesn’t have enough auto insurance.
-
An attendant care rider pays home health aide costs beyond what’s covered by a personal injury protection policy.
What Does Auto Insurance Cost?
Many items determine your auto insurance policy’s cost. These include:
-
Your credit score
-
Your marital status
-
Your age
-
Your yearly mileage
-
Where you live
